Coventry

Good lord, it IS quite a dump ;)

Comments

  • Same could be said for alot of places. Could you give us a little more detail?
  • It is quite a dump, you're right, have you been to check out the uni or was it just a passing observation?
  • no, I'm in position right now, luckily at the edge of coventry where things are a bit more green and tidy. had to go into town to sort out something with my bank and that was quite a change. dear me...;)
  • Arewe talking packs of wild dogs roaming the streets and burned out cars littering the roadsides's or just the ususal hookers, pimps and dealers having price wars from corner to corner in front of crack houses situated next to dive bars and porno houses?
  • no, he's talking about grime thicken grey walls of buildings soiled by decades of pollution, pakis and talibans in every street corner pushing vcds, groceries and condoms from pharmacies as fronts for backrooms filled with fuses and fertilisers...and not forgetting the chinks from hong kong and vietcong triads looking out for revenge on skinheads and neo-nazis...but we don't count the horrors of overweight women fattened by cornish pasties and roast beef with melons dragging the floors in 48ddd cupped bras.

he just miss his lithe autriche frauleins...poor kid!

    I'm .... feeling....quite sick.. BARFFFFFF
  • not bad facty, that would be brum or bristol. coventry is a bit different. the place had to be rebuilt after the war and the way they did it is that the whole centre feels like the backend of town where you can find the pound shops (you know what I mean, those shopping centres that never make any profit and always are half empty because the shops in there always fold after a few months) quite run down. girls aren't all that bad (if they wouldn't all be pushing a pram). just surreal, makes Diemen south of Amsterdam look like a world heritage sight. But hey, no time for strolling in the centre anyway ;)
  • Dumps?

Well I'm in Mumbai, right now and the last week has been a week of extremes.

My daily drive from the hotel is past slums and heaps of dirt with poor people sifting through the dirt for bits of usable material.

Then we had an evening with the glitterati at the Swarovski fashion show, attended by the Bollywood heros and heroinnes.

Professionally, its been a good week, and I have great respect for my Indian colleagues. It's beena nice change to get a different slant on the news.

I'll be home for the F1 and A1, and looking forward to clean green Malaysia.

  • I'm not in the habit of defending the English Midlands but, as you say RJ, Coventry was re-designed by the Luftwaffe.

Are there really no dumps in Europe? ... I must have been imagining them.
  • Folks you guys have to move out of the city. I am now afraid to go into Bristol City centre for fear of having my hair parted by a 9mm bullet from the Yardies or Duffed up by the local Bulgarian/Romanian mafia.
  • I thought guns were illegal in Britain?

BTW - what is a Yardie?
  • I know that Coventry was bombed but 60 years later that's not a great excuse, though one I acccept.

There are dumps in Europe (suburbs of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Charleroi, quite a few French places, etc) no doubt about it, but there seem to be quite a few in the UK. I guess that's because the difference between the haves and the have nots is a tad bigger than elsewhere in Europe. Still loving it, loving it, don't get me wrong. And of course there are nice places such as Bath, Oxford, Cambridge and the nation's capital (if you avoid Brixton that is).

Funny you mention Bristol. The bits around the Zoo are actually really nice but, true, the city centre gets a bit dodgy after dusk.

  • what is a Yardie?
    Jamaican Mafia, isn't it?
  • Jamaican Gangster. Yes guns are illegal but there is a thriving black market of imports from Eastern Europe.
  • Just more proof that gun control only limits law abiding citizens right to self defense.

re Jamacan Gangster.....I'd figure they were too stoned on righteous ganja to cause any trouble!
  • errrm.... how about no?
  • Unfortunately these gangstas ( correct spelling) are not real Jamaicans otherwise they would not be bothering anyone.
For me personally I have no desire to carry a weapon. Way too dangerous for my liking.
  • Cities are great, Petrol. All the truly horrible things happen in the sticks.

Crims generally kill each other. ('Yardie' comes from the yards or neighbourhoods in Kingston). Quite a few Jamaican Yardies try to operate in the UK but they are easily infiltrated. The Turks are the tough bastards.
  • before emmett asks again: the sticks is another way of saying boondocks... countryside
