Massa Operated on. Injured but now stable

According to reports from Ferrari and other sources, Massa has been operated on at a military hospital in Budapest. The result was positive and he is stable in intensive care.

Other reports mentioned that he suffered a fractured skull after being hit on the helmet by a spring from another car, after which he drove over the kerb and hit into the tyre barriers.

The TV showed an object that looked like a spring bouncing along the track with Massa's car running toward it.

We wish him a full recovery and send regards to his family.

  • Best wishes to his family and here's wishing him a full recovery.
  • According to breaking news on both the bbc website and autosport.com doctors have said that Massa has suffered damage to his eye and they are unsure as to how this affects his future formula 1 prospects. :(
  • Hospital bulletin looks positive.

Such a bizarre week with Surtees then this 'million to one' collision ... then Alonso fooling around with a wonky wheel. Renault's ban is totally justified.

re Massa: has anyone EVER heard of a spring coming unbolted?
  • He is one lucky boy. A similar injury accounted for Ayrton Senna. The aerospace quality Carbon fibre in helmets is amazing.
From a medical point of view he probably won't race before the end of the season. Brain contusion and suspected base of skull fracture are serious injuries.
  • If the eye is buggered he may never race again.

According to Autosport.com the doctors have now said "there is every chance that he will make a full recovery"

With all these mixed messages flying round it may be best just to wait and see.
