• MINARDI TAKES WINGS

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, September 23, 2005 – The Minardi F1 Team arrived in Sao Paulo optimistic of a strong performance in this Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix. Apart from the Faenza squad having performed well at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in previous years, the Minardi Cosworth PS05 chassis being used by drivers Christijan Albers and Robert Doornbos this weekend are fitted with a number of significantly revised aerodynamic components, including the front wing, floor and diffuser, which should assist performance levels. At the start of Friday’s two free practice sessions, Albers and Doornbos reported the track to be dusty and lacking in grip. As is the norm, however, grip levels improved as air and track temperatures rose and rubber was deposited on the surface. Both drivers concentrated on fine-tuning the handling of their chassis, and Doornbos, who turns 24 today, gave himself a memorable birthday present, recording the 14th fastest time of the afternoon. Albers, who found himself caught in traffic on his new-tyre run, completed the day in 19th place, but still ahead of five other drivers. The team’s official Friday tester, Enrico Toccacelo, is not present in Brazil, as he is competing for Team Italia in the inaugural round of the A1 GP Series at Brands Hatch this weekend.

ROBERT DOORNBOS Best lap: 1 min 13.922 secs Position: 14th
“It’s great to be able to celebrate my birthday with the Minardi team today. Everybody said ‘happy birthday’ this morning, which was fun, and to conclude the day like this was terrific. I was quick and able to get a good lap. I like this circuit a lot, and it was a great team effort as well. I have a new No 1 Mechanic on my car for this race, Ignazio Sanzone, and he was understandably a little bit nervous at the start of the day, but did a terrific job, along with all of the guys. I think we’re going to have a good birthday party tonight.”

CHRISTIJAN ALBERS Best lap: 1 min 14.563 secs Position: 19th
“I think it was quite a hard day today because this is my first time in Brazil and I didn’t do so much running this morning – only three flying laps. Then we started to go well at the beginning of the second session and were able to do a considerable amount of work. The car balance was good and we could turn consistent laps. When we did our new-tyre run, though, there was just too much traffic, so it wasn’t possible to set a really good time. We’ll just press on with our work tomorrow.”

PAUL STODDART, Team Principal, Minardi Cosworth
“To be ahead of three Red Bulls, both BARs, a Toyota and three Jordans can’t be a bad birthday present for any racing driver! Both Minardi drivers did a solid job today on a track where, given our modest expectations, we’ve always performed well. We look forward to continuing this progress through the weekend.”

• RD is deff here to stay!
• Awesome performance, i hope the race is about the same!!
• very impressive....let's keep it going !!!!
• Tsk, shows that by going with Red Bull we'd be going backwards, with Doornbos outperforming them all.

He was also 0.7s off a 7 times champ too.

If Minardi could be just 3sec off the pace at the end of last year at Brazil, with Bridgestones that on that day weren't the best, we could be in the hunt for some Sauber and Red bull fighting.

Perhaps the Red Bull team should relocate to Faenza from Milton Keynes- they might learn something.
• Lotsa new parts. YAY !:)

RD 14th! YAY !:)

Toccacello will still be 3rd driver for next events?! YAY:)

So, what happened to RD's former engineer?? Got snagged by TOIT or A1 Italy or something??

Below RD's press release:
Robert Doornbos shows impressive pace in Brazilian Free Practises

Robert Doornbos gave himself a nice birthday present as he finished the Friday Free Practises ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix in a surprising 14th position! At the 4,309 kilometer long Autodromo Carlos Pace the 24-year old Dutchman clocked a fastest time of 1:13.922.

With this outstanding performance, the Minardi driver left, among others, his teammate Christijan Albers and both race drivers of BAR, Red Bull Racing and Jordan GP behind him!

After Doornbos took it easy in the first hour of practise by lapping the Interlagos track only 12 times in his PS05, he drove a considerable number of laps more in the afternoon session (28 laps).

In the second Free Practise session between 14:00 and 15:00 hours, Doornbos mainly focussed on his tyre evaluation programme. In the closing stages of Free Practise 02 Doornbos managed to squeeze out a megaquick lap with which he surprised everyone in the Brazilian paddock!

Robert Doornbos:

"This is definitely a nice birthday present! Compliments have to go out to the team as I think we did a very good job with the remaining days of the weekend in our minds. For now, we have to wait what the weather will do here tomorrow and Sunday, but I believe we are in good shape. I hope we can keep this momentum and show the same speed tomorrow!"

• Oh come on guys!

He was light as a feather, as were the Saubers. Normal service will be restored tomorrow.
• Yes, only Minardi and Sauber made such runs and it was the first time all season. Excuse us, please.
• Jello - some of the Aussies are caving - don't fret.
• take it easy... our third last Friday runs, let's not spoil it.
• I predict the point for Doornbos before the practice!!!
Nice work!!!

I spy with my little eye Renault-style flaps on the front wing.
• Great Dornboos, buon compleanno!!!!
• Jello - some of the Aussies are caving - don't fret.
Caving to what? Reality?
• Working for the team now are we?
• The front wing looks the same as the Jordan one.

• During quali, Brundle was complimenting Minardi for its aero developments just as Bobby span off.
• Working for the team now are we?
I have no fucking idea what you are talking about. I posted that we were clearly on fumes, and then you two got all funny about me saying it.
• We Aussie's aren't the ones talking about packing up our bat and ball and going home... P1 was on the money with a pure observation, so spill it, what's up?
•
Working for the team now are we?
I have no fucking idea what you are talking about. I posted that we were clearly on fumes, and then you two got all funny about me saying it.
Of course we were light on fuel. Who wasn't?
• Is that what this is about? They think we are pissing off? Why? Because we aren't getting all militant proposing we storm the Red Bull Bastille?

You aren't going to change their minds - they would already know what the team is going to be called and if it's got Minardi in the name i'll stick around in some form.

If it's just corporate Red Bull Light i'll finally take my Mark Webber-supporting ass and migrate over to the only independent then left, Williams.

Jello and quig - you guys (esp quig) have a special affinity with Minardi because you've been to the factory and met the team. Good for you. Just because others haven't doesn't make their views any less worthy or relevant. ;)

If anyone don't like my viewpoint, eat shit. :o
• I don't know what all the fuss is about. Sorry for spotting a hole in your defeatist remark...

Well looking at the times for that session probably BAR, Toyota, Jordan and Williams.
• Whatever you want to think dude. Truth is that in the last 10 minutes of FP2, everyone does such a run.
