No Spa in 2006

Looks like an agreement couldn't be reached with the local Belgian govt and so Ecclestone has said no to Spa in 2006. Big Shame - best track to watch at by miles, easy to get to and cheap!

  • Yes it is a big shame, I've read that Ecclestone couldn't find an agreement because upgrade construction could not be completed in time for the race this year. So he needs a good punch in the face or something for doing this to one of the greatest race circuits.
  • I am holding out hope that Spa will be held as scheduled..... the more reliabale sites such as autosport, pitpass, and the official f1 (Bernies site) haven't reported anything on this story. Ger called the track today (friday) and was told that the race has not been cancelled.....BUT..... he was also told to call back on Monday (which has me a tad worried).

According to CrashNet, the problem seems to be that the work to be done on the pits and the paddock hasn't been started as of yet, and my HOPE is that this is a wake-up call to get that work started. I am realy looking forward to Monza ( ordered tickets already for Ger, Quig, and meself) and we are still hoping to go to Spa for a "two-fer".......
  • well, that just sucks!

Bernie better get his crap together as I was hoping to stay a bit closer in '07 an sample the wares in that girlie show!

    rat bastard.

(and I was hoping that you could treat richard, being that I gave you that way cool hat last year!)
  • Illustrates the chaos in the Fia. Moseley harping on about cutting costs while Ecclestone ransoms promotors for $15 million a year. Gives race promotors and teams a reason to look beyond signing up with Mr E.
  • Murph, I'm sure Spa will happen. It's the same old, same old that Bernie so loves with Silverstone/Spa/Imola ...
  • A couple years ago there were the same talks about Magny Cours.
In the end it is still on the calendar.

Now it's just another venue that gets the "BE treatment".
Which will get it next year, Monza ??? Hockenheim ???
  • Latest-
The FIA, ruling body of Formula One, have denied reports from yesterday that the 2006 Belgian Grand Prix has been cancelled.

A report in the Daily Telegraph, one of the UK's more respected broadsheets, explains that the speculation was fuelled by a Belgian local government minister who announced the withdrawal of Bernie Ecclestone from a deal intended to save the financially troubled race.

Ecclestone, the story goes on to say, was 'perhaps significantly unavailable for comment, and the FIA said they were not taking the claims seriously.'

The problem stems from a £10million loan given to the Spa Francorchamps promoters towards the cost of the 2005 race. The promoters, now bankrupt, face a struggle to raise the £12million rate for promotional rights to this seasons race.

The hope is that Bernie Ecclestone will assume the role of promoter, a deal that, until yesterdays rumours, was thought to be in place.

I agree with ya....... still, since this is part of the "adventure" Quig, Ger, and meself are embarking on in September, I wish Bernie wouldn't play games....
  • er.... to those who say it won't happen - when Spa said no to tobacco advertising a few years ago the race was removed from the calendar.

Imola and Silverstone won't get cancelled - Far too important Corporate wise for Ferrari and the UK based teams respectively

Spa is a great race track that produces great races.. However no major city nearby (like Barcelona, Budapest), no tobacco, rural location, cold and wet weather mean a lower corporate attraction and so easier to remove / play politics with.

Why do you think Budapest is still on the calendar? For racing reasons?

Would love to be proved wrong as I planned to go to Spa in 2006 (for the 4th time)

  • Why do you think Budapest is still on the calendar? For racing reasons?
'cause of the hooker camp that sets up right outside the track.
  • I have just been on the phone to Spa and looks like NO SPA GP this year. Thanks for nothing Bernie!
  • I'm pretty pissed off right about now.
  • Girls, it will happen.
  • did I mention this sucks?
  • If it doesnt happen, you can visit it on your tour with a hire car and drive around it!
  • Ste

If it came to that..... I'd rather we head off to Germany and drive the Nurburgring....... of course we would have to bring a large book with us so Ger could sit on it when it was his turn to drive the track..................................
  • :hehe:

    Sorry Ger

And this from a Mini Driver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I grow up....................!
  • Easy to get to and cheap
    Have you ever been there?
  • went to Spa in '04

this year we have a 4 person suite in Malmedy..... 5 nights for 400 Euro...... not too bad as when I go to Indy for the USGP I pay about a $800-$1000 for a room for the Missus and meself for 5 nights.....

tickets this year were to be the GA......

As I say this year would have been my 4th time. Last year I took the coach from London overnight, arriving early Sunday and returning back to London early Monday morning with general admission Sunday tickets (to be honest these give great views of the track)

Slept all the way there and back on the coach and the journey is not too bad at all. Did the whole thing for about £130
  • I should have mentioned that when Ger & I went to Spa in 2004....we had seats in Gold Stand 4 which were at the inside base of Eau Rouge. When we walked arond on Saturday we were both surprised just how good were the GA vantage areas........ I said back in '04, the next time I come to Spa I'm going to save 300 euro and go with GA....... when we were standing at Rivage, one felt that one could put their arm out and pat the boys on the helmet as they made the turn........

Indy's GA isn't bad but can't compare to Spa's in any way, shape, or form........ Montreal in the early 80's GA wasn't too bad, but now it is simply horrid.

  • GA at Barca used to be great, pre-Alonso! The grass bank on the outside of turn one was lovely but there's a grandstand there now.

I need a seat near the girl with the Chablis these days but:

GA at Silverstone is good ... if you get there at 6am.

GA at Magny-Cours was funny; row upon row of German deckchair STAKED to the ground the night before. Even without a chair, they had police tape to designate the patch of ground which was 'theirs'. Did anyone mention Poland?

130 Pounds cheap? Perhaps for you.
Don't ever go by car by the way, because if you do. You will see what I mean by hard to reach.
  • In 2004 when we went to Spa, we drove a rented van from Aachen to Spa. On Saturday we "experienced" the "Spa run-around"....... but we were quick learners and had zero problems on Sunday. There is the problem of getting into the track at La Source with the long line....... but all in all, it was pretty smooth sailing. Hope to get to do this again THIS year........ though it doesn't sound too promissing.....

I am psyched about Monza..... tickets are in Grandstand 6C..... and with our "native Italian linquists" Quig and Ger, I forsee no problems in Pit and Paddock access as well......... hahaha

Nurburgring in 2003 opened my eyes to how the Germans mark their space and youb dare not tresspass!!!!!!

Stan Spa is not difficult by car. An hour from aachen to Francorchamps, plenty of parking be it in a wet field but as regards being hard to reach it's a lot easier than Mangy Cours or even Silverstone pre '03.

grand prix ticket + overseas travel there and back for £130 is cheap - certainly cheaper than Eurostar, air or car hire

Just booked my Silverstone ticket - end of Hangar Straight 3 days - £159. Going to stay at a friends B&B 15 miles away and cycle each day there and back - any one else considering Silverstone? Cheap tickets (20% less than full price) available until 31st Jan

And still wearing it with pride!!!

  • From Pitpass:

Around two weeks ago, comments made by a Belgian politician, widely regarded as a loose cannon, resulted in a media frenzy, with website headlines claiming; "No Belgian GP in 2006", "Bernie drops Belgium" and "Bernie has cancelled the Belgian GP". Even the BBC, opted for the sensational approach with "Ecclestone 'pulls plug' on Spa GP", before later amending this to "Belgian GP facing Ecclestone axe".

Contacted by Pitpass that same day, a spokesman for the FIA said that the sport's governing body was "unaware of any change to the circumstances" surrounding the Belgian event.

Meanwhile, Bernie Ecclestone was up a mountain in Austria with (FIA President) Max Mosley and (Red Bull owner) Dietrich Mateschitz.

Only a week earlier, Ecclestone had told Alan Baldwin of Reuters that a deal regarding the Belgian Grand Prix was "close" and that he was confident the issue could be resolved.

"We are working on it and we are getting there," he told Baldwin.

"It's what they want," he added, referring to the prospect of him taking over as promoter. "It is not ideal but we have got to save Spa."

Then, a week later, following the Belgian politician's comments, the Grand Prix was back under threat, only now it appeared that the stumbling block wasn't merely money but redevelopment of the pits and paddock.

Since then, nothing, other than an interview Ecclestone did with a Belgian journalist last week, when the Englishman claimed; "It will be difficult."

As it stands, and with just over five weeks to go before the season kicks off, we are still unsure whether we will have a nineteen or eighteen race calendar. The FIA remains unaware of the problem, indeed nobody appears to know what is happening, not least the people at Spa, who seem unable, or unwilling, to respond to any enquiry.

Though this lack of news might suit some, Pitpass has to ask what about the race fans who were intending to attend the Belgian Grand Prix, what about the race fans who have already booked their tickets?

We have received e-mails from a number of fans concerned at the lack of useful information and the fact that they may well lose their money.

    Reader Jeff Kew writes:

"We attended the 2005 Belgian Grand Prix and on race day booking forms for 2006 were being given out at the entrances. These promoted discounts of up to 36% for booking before November 1st 2005. At this time there were no media reports of the promoter being in financial difficulty

We faxed a booking form for 2 Grandstand seats at Eau Rouge for 2006 on 13 September, cost 586 Euros (£412) to DDGP who subsequently confirmed the booking

On October 27 we discovered via the media that DDGP had been declared bankrupt with losses of $11.75M (with presumably all the advance income from bookings for 2006 - of which it is likely there are thousands - given the promotion of 2006 on race day and the early booking discounts)

We attempted to contact DDGP on Oct 29 - receiving a standard email response "We inform you that the company DDGP has no more activities concerning the Belgium Formula One Grand Prix. For more information contact info@spa-francorchamps.be"

We contacted info@spa-francorchamps.be in November and supplied details of our booking, and received the following response:

"Being given that the company DDGP which organized the G.P.last year went bankrupt, we do not know yet who will deal with the reservation of the tickets. We will have certainly more information in the next few weeks. As soon as we have this information, you will be able to find them on our site: www.spa-francorchamps.be "

As yet there is no more information, presumably everyone is waiting for the on/off Ecclestone deal. We do not know whether our booking will be honoured/whether refunds will be given and if so by who?

With DDGP going bankrupt with huge losses, it does seems surprising that they were able to promote and take bookings (with payments) for 2006 up to the day they went bankrupt, without a word of caution from anyone in authority. Did anyone know DDGP were in such difficulty and sit back while 2006 bookings were taken?

There has been no mention of how the existing bookings will be handled if there is / is not an Ecclestone deal, recognising that thousands of race fans may lose hundreds of pounds each depending on how events unfold."

This is just one of several e-mails that Pitpass has received, all telling, pretty much, the same story.

Other than the financial situation, which is bad enough, race fans need to make plans, if Spa is definitely off the calendar, they will need to make alternative arrangements for another race, that's if they haven't lost faith in the sport, which means reorganizing holiday time. Then again, having witnessed the Spa fiasco how safe is any race on the F1 calendar?

Yes, there is a certain amount of protection offered when people purchase race tickets by credit card, just as travel companies usually have procedures in place for such failures.

However, the fact is that there is a question mark over Spa, just as there is Monza, with just a few weeks remaining before the season kicks off. This is not the way that Formula One should be treating its customers, which is precisely what race fans are.

Will someone in authority - and we would assume that to be the Commercial Rights Holder - please take hold of this situation and state whether the Belgian Grand Prix is on or off, your customers need to know.
