Merchandise

Mega supplier Grand Prix Legends has issued an interesting report, slating the big car manufacturers and tedious PR-dom of the modern sport. Toyota charging £70 for a polo shirt takes the biscuit.

Ten years ago, F1 accounted for the whole business, now it is just 30% with Rossi speaheading the rest.

2005 sales:

Red Bull, Sauber, Jordan and Minardi = 2% of total (although 25% of diecast models!)

  • They're following Ferrari's lead. Where merchandising can be a nice earner for the team. Screw the fans, charge what they can get.

  • I made the decision long ago to not purchase ANY F1 or V8 Supercar merchandise.

I cringe at an $80 888Racing crew shirt, but try a $250 Renault one on for size! Bugger that.
