In many political movies where lawyers make the big shots, we always see someone trotting behind them or keeping tabs in the law firm. But somewhere behind them someone is trotting behind them or doing something in the lawyer’s office. So What is a Paralegal? A paralegal is someone who basically assists a lawyer. It is also this connection to a professional who is practicing law that they are also called legal assistants.
The concept of a paralegal differs from one country to another. In America, they are usually associated with personal assistants and they are not allowed by the government to practice law. Ontario, Canada on the other hand, they can perform some legal work once they have their Paralegal Certification. They are also being governed by the same laws and regulations of a lawyer. In Britain, any non-lawyer who performs certain legal work is considered a paralegal.
We have now defined what a paralegal is, so let us then answer the question of What does paralegal do? Basically, paralegals are the legal assistants of the lawyers. They are the people who work behind the scene. They do the paper work, in which they will do plenty of research about a certain case and gather that information in order to help win a trial. Many lawyers prefer paralegals to do this because paralegals are trained to do research in the same way as lawyers do. They also have secretarial duties namely fixing the lawyer’s schedule and ensuring that the lawyer follows that given schedule.
Paralegals are also the people who will do some interviewing in behalf of the lawyer when there is a need for some more information about the case. In the court, the paralegal is the person who will be submitting the forms and applications to the court and also organizes all the files. Furthermore, they are also the ones who keep everything organized.
It may seem then that the paralegal is more like a secretary or a personal assistant rather than someone working in a firm. But you would be wrong because there are plenty of people who clamor for this kind of job. One reason for this is that the salary is really good and there are also plenty of benefits. But ultimately, paralegals have a sense of satisfaction in this kind of job because they also play an important part in the delivery of justice in a certain case. It is like without them, the lawyer will have to do everything and that can be tiring.
Someone once said, “Behind a successful man is a great woman”. In lieu to that, behind the success of a lawyer lies a great paralegal. Hence, paralegals are very important in the legal system especially when it comes to help a lawyer deliver the strong arm of the law.
