Marc Gene is one of the many young talents who had the chance to make his first step into F1 driving a Minardi. The Spaniard joined the Faenza based squad in 1999, with financial support from sponsor Telefónica. That year Minardi succeeded in scoring a point in an incredible race at the Nürburgring, when Marc finished sixth ahead of Eddie Irvine's Ferrari.
Marc is a very eloquent guy. He earned a degree in Economics; he speaks English, German and Italian. The Catalan, born in 1974, began with kart, then switched to Italy's Superformula championship from which he moved on to British F3. A very important year for him was 1998, when he worked as an accountant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers while competing in Spain's Open Fortuna Formula for Nissan-engined single-seaters. It gave him the chance to forge two vital relationships. One was with former Minardi driver Adrian Campos, who ran the team; the other with Telefónica, Spain's telecommunications giant.
Winning the Open Fortuna Championship secured him a race seat with Minardi in 1999. He soon showed off his talent and his dedication. The highlight of the season came in the extraordinary European GP which saw both M01s battling for points. Unfortunately Badoer dropped from fourth place in the closing stages but Gene kept his cool until the finish line to take the final World Championship point that ensured Minardi another season of travel bonuses.
Marc didn't score any points in 2000, but the Spaniard and his Argentinean team-mate Gastón Mazzacane fought for every position securing Minardi a place in the top ten, ahead of Prost GP. When his sponsor Telefónica left Minardi in 2001, Gene took the decision to become a test driver for the BMW Williams team. He so far substituted Ralf Schumacher twice in 2003 and 2004. While in 2003 he was able to grab four points and his best ever result at the Italian GP, he was less impressive during his two race stint in 2004 and did not score a point.
