A very tough season for the team. Minardi hoped that by teaming up with Falvio Briatore they would be supplied with powerful Mugen-Honda engines. However this did not happen. Instead the team had to battle with the weak and unreliable Hart V8. The drivers were the funny and highly popular Japanese driver Ukyo Katayama and the gifted Italian Jarno Trulli who moved to Prost in the second half of the season.
Ukyo Katayama

Hey I didn't do it, it was the engine! Trulli scored the best results of the 1997 season (9th in Australia and Argentina) He was replaced by the Brazilian Tarso Marques who didn't have a good season. The positive part of the season was that Minardi was able to extend its collaboration with Magneti Marelli. They also were one of the first teams to get the fast new Bridgestone tyres.
