In 2000 Minardi used Brunner's second creation called the M02. It was powered by the same engine as used in 98 and 99 which was re-badged into the Fondmetal V10. The chassis was fully emblazoned by the Telefónica logo and rumours claimed that the Spanish giant was interested in buying the Faenza based outfit. Marc Gene was joined by Argentinean rookie Gastón Mazzacane.

Minardi did its best to improve their results (new innovative gearbox etc) but the team did not score a point that year. This was mainly due to the weak engine and the low budget. Minardi fought for every position and there were several highlights. For example Indianapolis when Mazzacane drove in third position for a while (even ahead of Hakkinen). At the end of the year there were various rumours about Minardi's future such as a possible takeover by Argentine TV network PSN. This was confirmed by the team and Gabriele Rumi was said to leave. However the deal fell through in the latter stages of the season.
