Gian Carlo Minardi grew up surrounded by cars after being born on 18 September 1947 in Faenza. His family managed a Fiat dealership (from 1927 to 1999), and until this day manages Iveco and Selenia dealerships, as well as an Agip fuel station in the region. Gian Carlo Minardi is married to Mara and has a son who is named after his father Giovanni. GCM is also the chairman of Faenza's football club Faenza FC.
In 1979 he founded his own team which entered F1 in 1985. In 2001 he had to sell all his stakes to Paul Stoddart in order to ensure the team's survival. However he remained the team's director until it was sold at the end of the 2005 season.
