The year 2001 marked a turning point in Alex's fortune. He left Formula Nippon, which he had been attached to since 2000, to join the [[European]] Minardi F1 team in July 2001. With sponsorship from [[Magnum]] Corporation and the strong support given by the Malaysian government, particularly the Ministry of Youths and Sports, Alex had his sight firmly set on Formula 1.
After a successful two-day test at the Mugello Circuit in [[Faenza]], Italy, in August, this ambitious young man was granted a Formula 1 Super-license by the world motorsport governing body, FIA (The International Federation of Automobiles). He not only became the first Malaysian, but also the first Asian non-Japanese Formula 1 driver in nearly half a century since Prince Bira of Thailand, who raced in the early 50s. Since his qualification for the Formula One World Championships, Alex competed in the last 3 races in 2001. He also went on to do the whole season in 2002 with Minardi, achieving a highest position of 7th at Melbourne, Australia. He finished 13th in Brazil, 10th in France and 13th in Italy. Alex also finished second in Monaco's Historic F1 Grand Prix in the same year.
