ALAN EVANS ANNOUNCES SERIES COMMITTMENT FOR 2008
Tuesday February 6, 2007 – Following the success of the weekend’s
A1GP World Cup of Motorsport event at Eastern Creek International
Raceway, Chairman of A1GP Australia, Alan Evans, today announced the
Series will return to Sydney in 2008.
“The race weekend at Sydney’s Eastern Creek International Raceway
was highly successful, especially when you consider the A1GP is only
in its second year both globally and in Australia.”
Evans further commented that organisers have earmarked the weekend
of the first to the third of February for the 3rd visit of the
global motor-racing series – known as the World Cup of Motorsport
due to the multi-national flavour of the event. He also confirmed
that A1GP intends to run the event at Eastern Creek International
Raceway again in 2008.
“We had a fantastic crowd to the track over the three days of racing
and great support for the home nation in addition to a great
representation from many ethnic Sydney-siders – confirming that our
city’s multicultural community creates the perfect forum for an
event of this nature.
“We are in discussions with the NSW Government to ensure we continue
to build on the event’s immense success and use A1GP as a catalyst
for increasing tourism opportunities and visitors to Sydney. A1GP
has the potential to provide a massive boost to tourism and increase
visitors to Sydney – something which the NSW Government and A1GP are
mutually committed to achieving.”
Evans added “We want to engender a broader celebration of motoring
and motorsport that will extend from Australia Day through to the
conclusion of A1GP, and embrace the city’s passion for sporting
events and our national identity.”
Mr. Evans also announced that the A1GP is seriously considering
running the unique A1GP cars on ethanol based fuel from next year.
“There appears to be no technical reason why ethanol cannot be
used,” said Mr Evans. “I will also be encouraging A1GP to look to an
Australian supplier for the provision of the ethanol globally – this
initiative will enhance the environmental credentials of
motorsport.”
