Long blond hair and round golden glasses (that gained him the title of "Professor"), he won 2 Tours, 1 Giro, 1 Fleche Vallone and 2 Milan-Sanremos, but passed to history for the famous final time-trial in Paris in 1989, where (thanks to the modern handlebar and aerodynamic rims) Greg Lemond beat him by 58 seconds, taking the Tour by the incredible, record gap of 8 seconds!!!!!!
He was only 50 years old, and till the last Tour he had bravely commented for French Tv, even though his appearance left small room for hope.
RIP Laurent, say hi to Binda, Coppi, Bartali, Anquetil, Pantani, Ocaña and all the other late heroes of cycling.
