Poor F1 driver

I just asked myself: has there ever been an F1 driver from a really poor background?

Comments

  • diniz:hehe:
  • yeah, I always thought that Senna wasn't too wealthy but his dad owned a couple of cattle farms so that's not my definition of a poor boy from the favelas
  • RJ, all the South American drivers were fucking rich, Senna's father is VERY rich and so Barrichello's father and Fittipaldi's father. Piquet's father was a Ministry in the Brazilian government....

Actually, if you look at the European drivers who came up until the seventies, some of them came I don't say from the slums, but for sure not from rich families: Prost's father, for example, was a haberdasher, and Mansell was everything but rich also. Others instead (like Cevert, Pironi, De Angelis, De Cesaris) were also bloody rich.
  • manlio, what's a haberdasher?
  • someone who sells clothes and accessories to men
  • a ma', parla come magni
    :hehe:
    (speak as you eat)
  • Sorry RJ, I was wrong: Prost's father was actually a blacksmith (Salvo, meand "fabbro":spank::hehe:)

Gilles Villeneuve.......his father was a piano tuner.

    ciao

    murph
  • Hakkinen was a carpenter - he used to have a van that he drove from job to job and did his work - and kept his Formula Ford in. He basically lived in it like a homeless person as far as I am told.
  • Schumacher's parents weren't bloody rich, sure as hell are now. I think as a young boy M.S. used other kids discarded kart parts.
  • What about TDW? I did'nt think his family were rich.....He may be now by taking advantage of sponsors who are DESPERATE in Holland for any tiype of race driver..........but not when he started (in advance, sorry for mentioning his name) :P
  • jackie stewart wasn't rich.
  • None of the top Brits I can think of have come from very rich backgrounds - or if they did weren't supported by their parents. Hunt, for example, had to scrimp and save his way in with poor machinery - Mansell too. Moss Snr was quite well off, I think, and Hawthorn too. Button and DC come from humble backgrounds. Damon had no family money - all had gone in the court cases.

Of the current crop, Massa was helping his dad sell pizzas at Interlagos until a year before his debut.

Anyway, financial reality + socialisation means top end motor sport generally only attracts ABCs in terms of participation.
  • Mansell, Fangio, Froilán Gonzalez, Tuero, Trulli, Fisi, Pierluigi Martini... I think there are more
  • jackie stewart wasn't rich.
    You sure?
  • Mark Webber. And he didn't have much sposorship either.
  • Viges, concerning Damon I knew that after Graham's tragical aircrash the familyn went into some financial problems, but I thought it was simply because they kept their high standard of living and after a few years all Graham's money was gone (at those times of course drivers did not earn as much as now).

I didn't know about any court cases. Can you please give more details?
  • I believe the Hill estate was sued by the families of the other victims, ie the core of the Embassy Hill team incl. Tony Brise.

    Cannot find a link, apologies.
  • maybe in a few years I could put my name under this topic.

    \dream mode off.
