World Cup

  • Folks, you may all be too young to notice the cyclical nature of world football. Its a 24 year cycle. That means Italy have their names written on the Trophy. The similarities to 1982 are uncanny. A football association reeling from a betting scandal. An outstanding Goal keeper in Dino Zoff, replicated in Buffon and a very mediocre start to the championship.
Really I can't see the German's wanting to go to penalties against this guy.
As for a Final between Germany and England. That would be a turgid affair that would cause the viewing public to do a collective Beckam.
Did anyone think that the Germans looked good yesterday? What were the Argies doing trying to sit on a 1 goal lead. Then the ARGIE BARGY afterwards, good God.
I fear for the Brazilians. No team with Mario Zagallo among the backroom Staff stands a chance. The guy has gone senile and taken Perriera with him. Why is the Fat man leading the attack? I did not know that we had exhumed Orson Welles and that he was playing football for Brazil?
In any event I can't see FIFA allowing Brazil to spoil the party by winning it again. That would mean Blatter having to melt down some of his own Bullion to get a New Trophy!!!
  • petrol, i used that in a conversation with some italian kids today and they looked at me as if awed by my wisdom:D now where do i send the money for the copyrights
  • Well, who's up for a French-German final?
  • How do you surrender in a soccer game?
  • You do a Rooney and Stamp on the opposing players gonads! Now thats got to hurt!
  • He lost his balance!
  • No, he lost his mind.

Boy, they choked on the penalties
  • We're good at that.

Sven the charlatan has gone now - well worth £23m of anyone's money. Bonkers substitutions, zero motivational powers, constant tinkering. The real shame is that it truly is a 'golden generation' for England which has been cheated.

Allez les Bleus - COME ON FRANCE!

(bet you never thought you'd hear me say that!)
  • Too bad for England, theyshow flashes, but never really did what I think they are capable of.

Oh well, I'm really backing Germany against the Italian diving team to make the finals. I am enjoying the way the German team is playing.

I was really surprise that France beat Brazil, but on form Brazil have struggled since the group stage...
  • Yes, I back Germany in that semi due to their fantastic goalie (who happens to play for Arsenal).

BTW Arsenal has supplied the most players to this tournament.

    Goooooners.
  • Speaking of the arsenal Goalie. FIFA have got to Stamp out( no pun intended) on the way he moves off the line during the penalty kicks.
  • TasM. France beating Brazil is no suprise. The Surprise would have been if Brazil had managed to beat a France by solely playing on the Break.
The Hard truth is that international Football is won in mid-field. Who was the Brazilian mid-field Maestro would BOSS the game? Portugal have Figo, France Zidane, Italy Pirlo.
Thats why I think that Given a fair run Italy would see off the workman like germans. Call it a triumph of artistry over artisan.
The last quality mid field player from Brazil was Falcao. Its ironic that the 82 team is looked upon with more affection in Brazil tan either of the two recent world cup winning teams.
  • Petrol, they gave up trying to stop the goalie moving a few years back.

Lehman STUDIES penalty takers - that's why he saves some. If only England were as coscientious.

Lehmann got his information from Huub Stevens. A Dutch trainer/coached who has worked in Germany before.

I give SchwarzRotGold a very good chance against the Azurri

Come on, every goalie does so. Why do you think Robinson didn't choose a corner when the third (?) Portugese took his penalty. He knew that person ocasionally just shoots them through the middle.

    Don't mention the war.
  • Too bad for Germany, but at least Italy didn't cheat this time. Lokk's like you were right on the money Petrol.

Still, I can't help but think they don't deserve to be there after the dive...

I'll be supporting their opponents in the final, though Italy will probably go on to win the cup.
  • Forza Italia! Talk about coming to the boil at the right moment. Two great goals. A movie producer couldn't make this up, what with the corruption scandal at home.

    Allez les Bleus tonight.
  • FORZA AZZURRI - What a wonderful game. The azzurri should have closed the game before - they played slightly better than Germany. Germany seemed a bit tired at the end. Gattuso is really a star! Grosso was fantastic.
Italy's teamwork is great and I would say that's what made the difference - they do not rely on only one player, look at the scorers, many players managed to score during this world cup....
  • I have to say, even though I am not a hot football fan, that yesterday it was an emotional game, and, even though I do not really care about Italy winning, I am happy the Germans are out, because this german team really COULD NOT win the cup. For what they showed in the 120 minutes, Italy actually deserved the win.
And it was an absolutely fair game on both sides, which was very important after all the stupid provocations, specially by the German press.

Now hope to see another great game tonight between France and Portugal, and win the best!!
  • The Italians deserved to win. It was good to see that they didn't play 'catenaccio' .
Hopefully the French will win this evening.
  • still a few nice exhibitions of the Italian's diving expertise, though.
  • You are over exegerating this diving expertise though MinardiP1. Hate it or love it, we see diving players in each game whether Italy is playing or not...
  • A Portugal versus Italy final would be a highlight in the theaterical season and a disaster for football in general.

no i'm not, it's what makes half the world think soccer is a complete wank.

If they made the 5th official actually earn his keep and introduced the TV replay for contentious decisions, you watch the amount of 'he hit me with a feather!' diving suddenly dry up.

Also, I can't fathom where your love of all things Italian comes from - don't you remember them happily assisting the Krauts in bombing the shit out of you 60 years ago?

    ;)
  • Euro-diving infects everything these days because the refs are scared to penalise it. Michael Owen and Joe Cole diving in England shirts absoultely appals me but it will remain part of the game until refs grow some balls.

Having said that, Italy-Germany was played in a very good spirit.

Yeah and the referee contributed to that
  • Portugal out. I won't shed a tear.

Hey MinardiP1 this is a good one indeed! however you should note these things.... (and I am not overreacting!!!!)
    1. When the Italians used to attack Malta, it is a documented well known fact that they never actually bombed Malta... all the bombs finished in the sea becuase their planes never dived to lower altitudes!!!!!!!!
    2. It is the Krauts that did the difference because their planes used to bombard Malta from a very low altitude as opposed to the Italians....
    3. Sports allegiances are not dependent on past history, after all its a sport and not about what happened in the past.
    4. Whenever Malta plays or takes part in a competition, we all support Malta, but whenever Malta is not than I support our neighbours, these are the Italians of course, besides having a lot of friends from Italy, there is a lot of proximity, we can go to Sicily in 25minutes plane.
    5. Also you must be aware that we were always in receipt of the Italians TV stations and that's why there is such affinity. (even though in the war, we blocked their frequencies!!!)
    6. Also, not all Italians bombarded Malta of course, I do like all that is connected with the alpini partigiani, but that would lead me to Socialism, and then I get some attacks from MCSF!
and I am not overreacting, remember?:P
